In 1945, the late Major Roy Cooper MBE established Shaftesbury Homes in Queensland, Australia with the purpose of housing orphans from war-torn England.  In 1967 the name of the organisation was changed to the Shaftesbury Citizenship Centre by the former Executive Director Reverend Allan Male.

Today the Shaftesbury Centre continues to maintain a charitable purpose by primarily focussing on assisting disengaged young people.
